Former French ambassador to Syria, Michel Duclos, said Syrian President Bashar Al Assad may remain in power for decades.
“I am afraid we have lost Syria for a long time”, Duclos was quoted as saying by the French journalist Georges Malbrunot on his Twitter account.
He recently published an article in Zenith, a German magazine which focuses on the Arab and Islamic world affairs.
In his article, Duclos blamed the administration of the former US President Barack Obama for failing to deal with the Syrian crisis, as well as for its indirect contribution to the spread of terrorism by refusing to provide the “moderate” opposition with weapons.
Like the European Council's report, the ambassador called on European countries to become more engaged in developing a peace plan for Syria. He also acknowledged the “great difficulties” that Europe might face in this area.
“Since the outbreak of the crisis in 2011, we have insisted on the departure of Assad, although we have not achieved any visible results”, French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview with CNN, adding that it’s time to move on and find a political solution that would end the crisis.
Macron also expressed the need to create acceptable political conditions so that the Syrians will be able to elect their leadership without any foreign pressure.
