Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said Russia does not object to France's proposal on establishing a new group for Syria, although it is unclear for the moment how legitimate and necessary it is.
“It is still difficult to determine whether the French proposal is necessary and legitimate. We do not object in principle to this, but we need to have a clear idea of why it is in fact needed”, Gatilov said in a statement as quoted by the Russian media.
Previously, the French President Emmanuel Macron called on the United Nations General Assembly to form a contact group for Syria to give a “fresh impetus” to a political solution to the ongoing crisis in the country.
