President of Romania, Klaus Johannis, has canceled his visit to Ukraine, scheduled for October, because of the new law on education.
"Having learned about this law, I canceled my visit to Ukraine, and I also refused to meet with the chairman of the parliament which was appointed for the end of September, so I submitted an extremely strong diplomatic signal." said Johannis.
According to the Romanian leader, the Ukrainian law on education, which caused debate due to restrictions on the study of minority languages, harms the relationship between Kiev and Bucharest.
"This law will severely restrict the access of minorities to education in their native language" - he declared.
The head of state also said that during one of the foreign trips he personally informed the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko about the cancellation of the visit.
"He (Poroshenko) was left quite anxious, and I hope that we will be able to find an approach that allows Romanians in Ukraine to continue their education in Romanian" - added Johannis.
