Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mouallem said Syria firmly rejects the forthcoming referendum on independence of the Kurdistan province of Iraq.

On Saturday, Mouallem met with his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim Al Jaafari, in scope of the 72nd UN General Assembly session in New York.

He called on the Foreign Minister of Iraq to visit Damascus in order to discuss ways of improving cooperation between the countries.

During the meeting, the two ministers discussed bilateral relations between Baghdad and Damascus and means of supporting the interests of both nations in various fields, especially cooperation in the fight against terrorism, and the effective presence in international conferences that contribute to the security and stability of the region.

Meanwhile, people from the Kurdish diaspora outside of Iraq have already began to cast their votes in electronic form for the referendum that is otherwise scheduled for September 25th.

The head of Kurdistan’s ruling regime, Massoud Barzani, expressed readiness for serious dialogue with Baghdad, and has even agreed to“postpone” the referendum.

On Thursday, the foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey and Iraq issued a joint statement, saying that the referendum was not in the interest of anyone in the region, Kurdistan and its government including, announcing their commitment to take concerted steps to prevent the referendum from being realized.
