“More than two and a half years of renewed conflict in Yemen have once again put the education of 4.5 million children on the line, adding to the long list of bitter hardships that children have endured”, sad Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Cappelaere said three quarters of teachers have not received their salaries in nearly a year, adding that the violence has forced one in ten schools across the country to close.

He said the ongoing salary crisis has pushed the teachers to take extreme measures simply to survive, noting that the ongoing humanitarian efforts are only a “drop in the ocean” in terms of the suffering the people of Yemen are going through.

He urged to stop using schools for military purposes and called to solve the ongoing teacher salary crisis so that the children will have access to their education.

Since July 2017, the Saudi-led war has destroyed nearly 1,600 schools, while 170 schools are currently being used for military purposes or as shelters for displaced people.

According to UNICEF, as many as 2 million Yemeni children currently have no access to education.
