Russia Today (RT) may stop broadcasting in the US due to pressure from the US authorities. RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan stated this in an interview on Russia's NTV channel.

According to her, "in the worst case scenario," RT may leave the US territory and no longer broadcast, and Russia will respond in the same way to the American media working here. "I would not like to see this come to fruition, because I'm a journalist," Simonyan said.

The television channel has been put under such conditions, that journalists cannot freely carry out their work.

In early September, the US Justice Department ordered the company that provides the current activities of RT America to register as a foreign agent . In the House of Representatives of the US Congress, meanwhile, a bill was introduced to change the requirements for the registration of foreign agents.

The document proposes to give the US Justice Ministry additional powers, allowing to identify and prosecute in court organizations that try to "illegally" influence political processes in the United States.

According to Margarita Simonyan, the demand of the US Justice Ministry is illegal and is another attempt to impede the work of RT.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing in late September that the situation with the RT television channel and the Sputnik agency in the US is contrary to the principles of freedom of speech.
