Tillerson urges US congress to allow Trump to use military force around the world
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called on the congress to allow the administration to use force against terrorists without specifying the limits of application.
"A new authorization for the use of military force should not be restricted from a geographical point of view. As in the situation with the current authorization, the administration will need to have the obligatory permission to use military force against an enemy who has no regard for borders and does not limit himself to them," Tillerson said at a Senate hearing.
At the same time, according to him, the administration is against the cancelling the current permits that were issued in 2001 after the September 11 attacks and in 2002 on the eve of the war in Iraq.
A similar position was expressed at the hearing by Defense Secretary James Mattis.
US presidents periodically address the Congress for permission to use military force, but often do without it. In addition, there is a practice of broad interpretation of such authorizations - for example, the fight against ISIS is conducted on the basis of the permission given for military actions against Al-Qaeda and the Iraqi government headed by then-President Saddam Hussein.
