SEOUL, South Korea - A North Korean soldier was shot at as he defected to the South on Monday where he was found just south of the South’s border in the village of Panmunjom which straddles both countries.

Footage from South Korean news agency Yonhap and republished by Ruptly shows the soldier being rushed into the Ajou University Hospital in the city of Suwon after sustaining injuries to his elbow and shoulder.

The soldier’s defection comes amid rising tensions between the North and the South, as well as a war of words between Pyongyang and Washington.

Over 30,000 North Koreans have fled to South Korea since the late 1990's through China. Relative few cross the demilitarized zones that dot the border between the two Korea's where minefields, sentry posts and electrified or barbed wire fences make crossing extremely difficult.
