Poll: Russian citizens are proud of their security forces
The majority of respondents would approve if their children decide to serve

According to a recent poll by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VTsIOM), Russian law enforcement and security agencies are working effectively. Citizens gave high marks to all of their security and emergency forces, with Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Emergency Situations having the highest approval ratings. Russians also generally approved of the work of the Foreign Intelligence Service, the FSB (FBI in America – ed.), the Federal Protection Service, the Federal Penitentiary Service and the police.

The majority of Russians said that they were mostly interested in the changes that occur in the GIBDD (traffic police – ed.) and MVD (regular police – ed.) of Russia, as well as the Ministry of Defense and the MChS (Ministry of Emergency Situations).

Russian citizens appeared less satisfied with the work of the Department of Migration and the Department of Drug Control within the police ministry. To be fair, we should note that these departments had been autonomous agencies until recently. After the abolition of the Federal Migration Service and the Federal Drug Control Service, a segment of professionals from those services went on to work in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Overall, Russians are proud of the work of their law enforcement, defense, and emergency agencies; 53 percent of the respondents went as far as stating that they consider security forces as a desirable place of work for their children. Only 36 % of the respondents disagreed with that statement.

Comment by Tatzhit:
The overall approval ratings, and especially the poll results for the last question are broadly similar to the results one would see in USA - a country with a very long tradition of respect for lawmen and huge, very well-funded security/defense/emergency apparatus.

This is in stark contrast to the situation in Russia some 10-20 years ago, when police were generally seen as corrupt, dangerous to civilians and powerless against crime. Crime rates also tell a story of a very successful fight against crime in the last 10-15 years (see graph below).
