The American authorities established the first award to be awarded for special achievements of soldiers fighting in the cyber-space or control unmanned vehicles, reported the official website of the Ministry of Defense.

"The new opportunities available to American soldiers allow them to fight the enemy and change the tide of battle, while stationed at the remote point, - said defense minister Leon Panetta - Unfortunately there were no awards that these people could receive for their services".

"A new medal is our recognition of outstanding achievements that had a direct impact on the course of events, but does not include the display of courage and is not connected to life risks that are inherent in a real fight," - explained Panetta.

"The emergence of new awards shows changes of the principles of military actions," - said U.S. army general Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff under the minister of defense.

With the advancement of cyber-attack technology the next "Pearl Harbor" could happen in the virtual space, said Panetta.

Each award of the Distinguished Warfare Medal will be approved by the minister of defense.

In addition to combatants in the cyber space, the new medal will be available for commanders of unmanned military aircraft, unmanned underwater vehicles and space troops.

One of the examples of people that could receive the new award may be an operator at a military base in Nevada, managing aerial drones in Afghanistan. Another example is - a soldier in Maryland who is able to detect and prevent cyber attacks on computer network of the ministry of defense, noted the press release of ministry.

The last time a new award for American troops was established in 1944 - the Bronze star, given for bravery and heroism on the battlefield.

A new award will have a higher rank compared to the Bronze star, but lower than the Silver star, the Associated Press reports.

The US was first to create a cyber army. Lieutenant General Keith Alexander announced about this need in 2009. President Barack Obama signed a decree according to which cyber infrastructure companies and intelligence agencies will exchange information on cyber threats, and will develop national standards for cyber security.
