Vladimir Putin's official visit to Budapest took place earlier this month. Putin met with Hungarian PM, Viktor Orban, who has been classed as the ‘black sheep’ of European politics. Orban's views frequently contradict the mainstream establishment view; his skepticism towards the so called ‘open-borders’ policy and anti-Russia agenda has drawn criticism from many on both sides of the Atlantic.
The European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, publicly greeted Orban as “the dictator” at the Eastern Partnership summit in 2015. But Orban is no longer the only European politician with such views - with Brexit, and with the coming elections in France and Italy, it is possible that liberal leftists are on the way out. What kind of reprecussions will this have on the intactness of the transnational European bureaucracy?
