Syria’s armed forces have retaken Palmyra with the support of Russian air forces. This report was been presented to Russian President Vladimir Putin by Minister of Defense Sergey Shoigu. Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, has confirmed this.
Palmyra is one of the wealthiest centers of ancient civilization which has been controlled by the Islamic State terrorist organization since mid-May 2015. The Syrian Army liberated the city at the end of March 2016 with the support of Russian air forces.
However, Palmyra was re-captured by terrorists back in December.
Syrian troops and allied militias have recently waged offensive operations under the support of government air forces, gradually forcing the extremists out of the city. Fleeing the city, the militants have booby-trapped roads and buildings with mines.
