At a session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council on March 7th, Prime Minister of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, stated that countries part of the Eurasian Economic Union are buying Russian gas at preferential prices, while exiting the union would inevitably threaten an increase in the cost of natural gas.

“Let’s be straight and blunt: if some of the countries here were to not be part of our union or would exit it, they would now be buying gas at European prices. Nothing needs to be proven or checked in the calculations - everything would be much more expensive,” the Prime Minister is quoted as saying.

Medvedev also asked member countries to not “decelerate integration.” According to him, no one is being forced to be a member of the EEU.

The Eurasian Economic Union currently includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Over the part several years, together all of these countries have increased their exports to the Russian market, received preferential deals on energy cooperation, and have strengthened their industrial cooperation.
