TBILISI, March 2 - RIA Novosti. Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Gen. Peter Paul urged Russia to "withdraw recognition" of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

"We call on Russia to withdraw its recognition of independence of these two regions and to express the respect of Georgian borders," - said General Paul, after meeting with Georgian Defense Minister Levan Izoria.

Paul also believes that Russia should be involved in ensuring the security of the Black Sea.

"We recognize that we need a sensible dialogue with Russia in order to become a party to ensure the safety of the process of the Black Sea region", - said the general.

Georgian troops in 2008 attacked South Ossetia and destroyed part of its capital. Russia, defending the republic, many of whom have taken Russian citizenship, replied with troops and ousted the Georgian military. After the "five-day war" Moscow recognized the sovereignty of the two former autonomous regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
