Iraqi Armed Forces and Federal Police units are still involved in violent clashes with the terrorist group ISIS in the old city of Mosul on multiple fronts.

Today’s efforts, however, proved to be fruitful as they led to the killing of Abu Anas Al Shishani, a deputy leader of ISIS, who was killed in an artillery strike on Al Borsa square.

Iraqi forces are approaching the Great Mosque of Al Nuri and are about 300 to 400 meters away from Al Hadba, its leaning minaret.

In their desperate attempt to survive, the ISIS militants keep shelling and attacking civilians and infrastructure. Mortar fire has caused material damage to the minaret, belonging to one of the mosques in the old city of Mosul.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Federal Police chief, Raed Shakir Jawdat, said the recent liberation of Mosul Airport helped to drop the "cult status" of ISIS as an unbeatable organisation, while also stressing that the Washington-led coalition helped the Iraqi side by taking its part in battles through advisers.

It is also worth mentioning that the Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights said that ISIS terrorists detained dozens of families in the right coast of Mosul, 300 children including, and are using them as human shields.

Since February 2017 Iraqi forces, backed by the US-led coalition, are involved in an anti-ISIS operation in Mosul, dubbed “We’re coming for you, Nineveh!”. So far the results were positive as most parts of Iraq’s second largest city have already been liberated.
