“Only the enemies of Turkey are against expanding presidential powers”, said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the wake of the forthcoming referendum, during his campaign in Istanbul.
"Those, who were thrown into the sea 100 years ago, now say 'no' to the constitutional amendments. With their horses they want to hit those who want to say 'yes'", Erdogan was heard saying, according to an announcement made by the Turkish Diken news agency.
By making such statements, the Turkish president Erdogan was clearly referring to the tragic events between 1922-23 when the then Turkish authorities were systematically executing the Pontic Greeks. Tens of thousands of people were killed and many were thrown into the waters of Bosphorus.
