“Tehran plans to establish a transport corridor between the Persian Gulf and the Black Sea, with the purpose of promoting rapprochement between the countries of the region and to reduce the costs of cargo transfers, in addition to establishing a joint cooperation between the countries of the region”, said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif during a press conference with his Georgian counterpart Mikheil Janelidze. He also pointed out that the corridor will link the countries of the region with Europe.

For his part, Mikheil Janelidze said “We discussed a number of issues, including cooperation between the two countries as regards the field of energy, transport, border crossing, economy and agriculture. This year we also celebrate the 25th anniversary of our diplomatic relations, which only got deepened over the years.”

The two ministers stressed the importance of economic cooperation between the two countries, especially as regards transit, industry, education and cooperation on international and regional issues.

Maritime transport is often regarded as lifeblood of global economy and is responsible for transferring of up to 90% of all international cargo shipments on an annual basis.

Zarif visited Georgia in the wake of strengthening the regional cooperation. From there he will then travel to Kyrgyzstan. His delegation includes several high-ranking officials and important businessmen.
