Alexander Kaverin, the train driver of the blown up St Petersburg train, made the decision to keep driving to the next station, "given it did not interfere with the movement of the carriages."
In October of 1995, a similar even occurred in Baku, Azerbaijan. The train driver did not make the same decision, but rather stopped the train where it was at the time of the incident. As a result, a stampede eventuated that resulted in many more casualties - up to 300 dead.
Kaverin explained his actions earlier to RT, specifying that he was trained for emergency situtions.
"There was no time for fear - I had to work" - he says.
The driver may have prevented the deaths of many more passengers.
