After 3 years of carnage, two senior UN officials finally dared to raise their voices and condemn the US-led coalition forces bombardment of civilian areas in Syria, that have, only in the past 48 hours, resulted in dozens of civilians, a significant number of them women and children, being killed.

Less than 48 hours after attack on the village of Jazaa, located near the town of Al Shadadi in the countryside of the Syrian province of Hasakeh, where 20 people were killed, 78 civilians were killed after coalition forces jets struck the residential areas in the northern Syrian city of Raqqah.

“The United Nations strongly condemn the attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure,” said a joint statement of Ali Al Za'atari, the Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, and Ramesh Rajasingham, Acting Humanitarian Coordinator for the region.

“The international community reminds all parties involved to act in accordance with international and international humanitarian law, in order to protect civilians and spare as many lives as possible”, the statement added.

In the past months, aerial bombardment, conducted by the US-led international “anti-ISIS” coalition forces, resulted in scores of civilians, including many women and children, being killed.

The so-called “international coalition” was formed by Washington in August 2014, without the approval of the UN Security Council.

Although it is supposed to be fighting terrorism in Syria and Iraq, the actual facts prove that most of its targets consist of civilians and infrastructure, including in areas not under occupation by ISIS terrorists.

The US-led coalition also approved the use of bombs, containing the internationally banned white phosphorus, while bombing residential areas of Raqqah back in June. Aside from dozens of civilians who were killed, the bombardment resulted in destruction of a main public hospital in the city.

Later, white phosphorus was used when raiding the villages in the countrysides of Deir Ez Zour and Aleppo.

Due to increased violence against civilians, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates urged the UN Security Council and the United Nations to immediately put an end to the violent acts of the US-led coalition, and force the countries involved to respect the international law, although to no particular avail.
