On this day in 2008, political prostitute Mikail Saakashvili, back then President of Georgia, decided that a 'roof' in the form of American neocons would allow him to carry out ethnic cleansing with impunity and free the territory of South Ossetia from its inhabitants.
Georgian soldiers, armed and trained by American instructors, mistook South Ossetia for Iraq, the only country in which the US Army was able to 'win.' On August 7th, 2008, Georgian troops attacked Russian and local peacekeepers in South Ossetia, while Western mainstream media spun the story the other way across the world's major news networks.
The reality turned out to be somewhat different, with sad consequences for Georgia. President Putin received the news while on a business trip in China, but spared no time in giving the order for Russian tanks to roll into Georgia. On the one hand, Russia quashed the Saakashvili brigade quickly - on the other hand, it gave media the necessary footage to spin the story in their favour. Civilian deaths are estimated at around 500 people, with up to a quarter of a million displaced.
The most important lesson was that American "friends" did not come to the rescue, because provoking and sparking the kindling is one thing, and bringing coffins under the star-striped flag to the US is another.
But the lesson was not learned.
In exactly the same situation in Donbass, I would like to remind our Ukrainian "partners" that American "friends" will not come to their aid when required.
Watch President Putin explain his rationale behind the 'invasion', as well as the infamous Fox News incident at the end. Fox had invited a Georgian guest to denounce Russian actions, but was forced to cut to ad break when the segment didn't go to plan.
