The regime led by the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has launched a new wave of purges in Turkey.

So far, hundreds of employees of the army and government institutions, were fired under the pretext of their association with the attempted coup which took place in July last year. 

According to a decree, recently issued by Erdogan, 992 employees of the Ministries of Justice, Interior Affairs, Science and Technology, Foreign Affairs, Energy and Natural Resources, Food and Agriculture, Defense, and Education were laid off, in addition to the dismissal of hundreds of people who were in command of the land, sea and air forces, as well as 172 academics from different educational institutions throughout the country. 

Three associations, two newspapers and a news agency were also shut down under the pretext of carrying out activities that “threaten security of the state.”

Several commanders in Turkish Air Force and at least three navy commanders lost their jobs and retirement rights.

Supervision of intelligence services was also withdrawn from the prime minister and handed over to Erdogan.

In the wake of the attempted coup, Erdogan has since last year purged tens of thousands of employees in government institutions, army, judiciary, security and media, under the pretext of their association with the the exiled Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen, a former friend of Erdogan who now resides in the United States, and whom the Turkish regime accuses of being behind last year’s coup.
