The İstanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office has issued arrest warrants against 35 journalists suspected of links to the US-based opposition activist Fethullah Gulen, the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet daily reported on Thursday.
The newspaper added that the journalists were included in the “blacklist” for using the smart phone application known as ByLock which allows private and encrypted communications.
The journalists are accused of exchanges with last year’s “coup plotters.”
It is noteworthy that Turkish authorities consider every single Turkish citizen who is using ByLock a Gulen collaborator, despite no evidence.
The newspaper said security forces launched a campaign of arrests and raids, and searched the homes of detainees, including the home of Burak Ekici, the editor of Birgün daily, according to its website.
During the past year, Turkish authorities have come under heavy criticism from Western countries and human rights organizations over rigorous crackdown on thousands of citizens, including senior government, security and military officials, following a failed coup attempt.
In particular, these measures targeted a great number of prominent Turkish journalists, known for being opposed to the regime of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, raising accusations against Ankara of using the coup attempt as an excuse to silence the country's opposition press.
