The Public Prosecutor's Office of the Spanish State has ordered the Prosecutors' Offices of Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida and Girona to summon and declare under investigation the 712 mayors of town councils across Catalonia who have agreed to collaborate with the Catalan government to hold the referendum, El Nacional reported.
Prosecutors of Catalonia will issue the arrests on the grounds of being "in relation to the presumed acts of cooperation in the organisation of the illegal referendum," if they do not present themselves, Spain's Public Prosecutor's Office announced.
To avoid arrest they must present themselves to the four mentioned prosecutors office "in the possible shortest time".
If all mayors present themselves to the four prosecution offices, prosecutors then have 12 days to question all the mayors.
Despite being unconstitutional, the autonomous region of Catalonia will proceed with a referendum on October 1 which aims to achieve independence from Spain.
Madrid says that its constitution, written by remnants of the dictatorship in 1978, does not allow for regional governments to conduct independence referendums. Although independence movements exist in all regions of Spain, they are most prominent and strongest in Catalonia and Basque County.
