The Prime Minister of Turkey, Binali Yildirim, has just revealed that his country are considering sanctions against Iraqi Kurdistan.

"We are considering imposing sanctions on Iraqi Kurdistan after their decision to go ahead with the referendum," he said.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry also urged its citizens to leave the Kurdish provinces of Dohuk, Erbil and Sulaimaniya, as well as the disputed territory of oil-rich Kirkuk, unless it is absolutely necessary to remain.

This comes as Iraqi Kurds begin voting in the independence referendum today where it is expected they will overwhelmingly vote in favor.
