Donbass has become one of the most mined regions in the world. UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Ursula Muller stated this in her briefing on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.
In addition, more than 2.5 thousand civilians have been victims of armed confrontation, and more than 1.6 million citizens of Ukraine have become internally displaced.
"Eastern Ukraine is faced with protection problems: it is rapidly becoming one of the most mined regions in the world, and if the problem is not resolved it will hinder its development for many years to come." De-mining and mine risk education are needed in all conflict-affected areas, especially along the contact line, including checkpoints on the de facto border," Muller said.
We note that today Ukrainian President Poroshenko called the creation of the UN a Ukrainian holiday.
Earlier today, Ukraine's permanent representative to the United Nations, Volodymyr Yelchenko, accused Russia of a humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine.
We also add that on October 16, a representative of the Donetsk People's Republic at the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of the Ceasefire in Donbass said that the mine clearance along the contact line in the Donbass may take about nine years.
