Yahya Safavi, top military adviser to the Iranian Supreme Leader, hinted at the possibility of war with the ruling regime of the autonomous Kurdistan province of Iraq, should the things escalate.
In his press statement which quoted by the Iranian media, Safavi said that should the Kurdistan province declare its independence by force, the borders between Iraq and Iran will change, meaning the long-lasting war between Kurdistan and at least four states, Iran including, will most definitely outbreak.
The adviser to the Iranian supreme leader accused the US, Israel and a number of Arab states of escalating tensions between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the central government in Baghdad.
He then noted that terrorist group ISIS would take over Iraqi Kurdistan if it wasn’t for the counter-terrorist efforts of the Iranian Armed Forces as its terrorists were only about 30 kilometers away from the Kurdistan province.
On September 25th, the ruling Barzani regime staged a referendum on secession of the Kurdistan province from Iraq. The referendum, which was surrounded with scandals, was reportedly supported by 93% of the voters.
The government of Iraq rejected the results of the unconstitutional referendum and has already prepared a list of countermeasures, including ceasing all international flights to and from Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports in Kurdistan province.
The referendum was also opposed by the United Nations, the United States, United Kingdom, Turkey and Iran.
