The issue of implementation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project has not been removed from the agenda. Moscow receives 'signals' from its European partners about their readiness to continue on energy cooperation, despite the expansion of US sanctions.
"As you know, the Nord Stream 2 project is being discussed with Germany and a number of other countries, which is known to be a purely economic project. At least two countries (the Russian Federation and Germany) and our closest partners, Austria and Belgium, have not removed the project from the agenda" said Sergei Nechaev, Director of the third European department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
He responded positively to the question of whether there has been any sign from European partners, in regard to their readiness to continue cooperation in the oil and gas sector, despite the expansion of US sanctions.
"Yes, we get clear signals from our European partners about their readiness to continue cooperation in the gas sector. Russia has always been and remains an absolutely reliable, permanent gas partner for European countries, with many of the, this cooperation has been going on for more than half a century, and we never gave rise to doubts, we've never failed them," he said.
As of January 2018, the US government will expand restrictive measures against Russian oil and gas companies. The new sanctions are designed to prohibit companies from the US and third countries to do business with the Russian oil and gas complex. The mechanism by which third parties may get around said sanctions has not been elaborated.
