Russia has sent a powerful aircraft carrier group and nuclear missile cruiser to Syria. On Saturday at 15:00, an aircraft carrier group including a the Admiral Kuznetsov heavy aircraft cruiser and Peter the Great heavy nuclear cruiser began its journey in the northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. This was officially reported to Interfax by the press service of the Russian Northern Fleet.
The naval group’s composition also includes the Severomorsk and Vice Admiral Kulakov large anti-submarine ships and support vessels.
“The aim of the transfer is ensuring a military naval presence in extremely important areas of the world ocean,” the press service of Russia’s Northern Fleet stated, adding that special attention will be paid to ensuring the safety of maritime navigation and Russia’s maritime economic activities. In addition, they will focus on responding to new types of modern threats such as piracy and international terrorism.
“The campaign will improve sea training and the combat coordination of surface ships’ crews and practice joint actions of the aircraft group and air forces, including helicopter and plane flights. Joint exercises with other ships of Russia’s other naval fleets are planned,” the announcement reported.
“A few days earlier, the crews of the aircraft carrier group completed the planned preparations for the journey in the Northern Fleet’s combat training ranges in the Barents Sea,” the Northern Fleet reported.
The last joint journey of Russia’s Admiral Kuznetsov and Peter the Great ships to the Mediterranean and Northeastern Atlantic was in the first half of 2014. For the flagship of the aircraft carrier group, Admiral Kuznetsov, this is its eighth such trip.
