President-elect Aleksandar Vucic has stressed the need for acquiring a mobile multichannel air defense missile system S-300. He had already mentioned this project in March 2017 just before meeting the Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
Serbia needs two divisions of the anti-aircraft missile system S-300, as well as a control room of the regiment. Their acquisition is currently the subject of discussions with Russia and Belarus, the Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, elected president on April 2nd, told the journalists on Sunday, April 16th. According to him, this issue was discussed directly with the presidents of the Russian Federation and Belarus, Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko.
However, Mr. Vucic noted that no concrete agreement on the delivery of S-300 had been signed, but that a meeting with the Russian president on this subject had taken place.
"There is no agreement on this issue, but it would be very important for us to have at our disposal two divisions and a regiment control room. This would be a solution for us in the long run”, said the president-elect of the Republic of Serbia.
Also, in responding to the question of a journalist on the possible delivery of S-300 to Croatia in the 1990s, he stressed that he had no such information and that Russia had officially denied these reports.
It is to be noted, that during the last visit of the Serbian prime minister in Moscow at the end of March 2017, the issue of delivery of the Russian weapons had also been raised. Mr. Vucic had announced his intention to discuss with Mr. Putin the acquisition of the Russian air defense system BUK and S-300.
"Our idea is to talk about the S-300 (Russian air defense system), this is also a defensive weapon ", - had declared at the time the Serbian Prime minister on Serbian television channel RTS Sat.
During the unofficial visit to Moscow in 2016, the Serbian prime minister had reached an agreement with the Russian minister of defense, Sergey Shoygu, on the delivery of six MiG-29 planes, 30 tanks and other armored vehicles.
