May 9th is the biggest and most sacred holiday for the Russian World. The famous director Nikita Mikhalkov even compared the day to Easter. After all, both holidays celebrate victory over death through death. In the Great Patriotic War, the people of the Soviet Union lost 27 million compatriots, leaving almost no family in Russia that didn’t lose someone in the war.
In my family, both of my grandfathers fought in the war. One fought the entire war from the first to the last day and returned home with wounds, awards, and medals, while my other grandfather was captured and put in a concentration camp. Two of my grandmother’s brothers fought in the marines in Crimea and went missing.
My story is just one example out of millions. For all Russians, this is not only a national, but a family holiday that brings tears to one’s eyes.
May 9th also carries special meaning for the People’s Republics of Donbass, who like no one else understand the cost of victory. Today, they are at war with the heirs of the Hitlerite Nazis and their collaborators, the Ukrainian Banderites. For the third year already, Donbass is at war with Nazi Ukraine and the countries of the West supporting Kiev (commandoes from NATO countries have been fighting on the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ side the whole time). Donbass sees their war as a continuation of the war waged against Nazism.
Like Belorussia, Ukraine particularly suffered from the German-Fascist occupation. Hence why it is so horrific that a significant part of this former Soviet republic is so susceptible to Nazi ideology. The reasons for this run very deep and are not confined to the Euromaidan, which was but a consequence, not the reason for the growth of neo-Nazism in Ukraine.
Both today and back then, Donbass has supplied many of war heroes. From my very on native town of Konstantinovka in Donbass, there are 23 Heroes of the Soviet Union. But today the Victory Day holiday is banned in Ukraine. Ukraine is being warped from one of the victor countries alongside Russia, other republics of the USSR and countries of the anti-Hitler coalition that broke Nazi Germany and its allies, into one of the loser countries. This is no wonder, since after the Euromaidan the current Ukrainian government came to belong to the spiritual and often physical heirs of the Banderites who were defeated by the Soviet Army. This is the revenge of the Nazis on a victorious people. Galicia and Volhynia, which yielded the Banderite Ukrainian Insurgent Army, have imposed their lies about the war onto the rest of Ukraine. In my native Konstantinovka and all of Ukrainian Donbass today, there was no Victory Parade. The Banderites, after all, cannot celebrate the day of their defeat.
However, Victory Day is being widely celebrated in Donbass. Today I talked with my friends in Donetsk, according to whom the number of people wanting to take part in the Immortal Regiment March was so great that many had to be turned away. The authorities of the Donetsk People’s Republic had to resort to this out of security concerns, since on this holiday so sacred for the people of Russia and Ukraine, the Banderites heavily shelled some of the republic’s territory (the Spartak village near Donetsk, Yasinovataya, etc.).
Nevertheless, more than 60,000 people attended the military parade and Immortal Regiment procession held today in Donetsk’s central square. A military parade and Immortal Regiment procession were also held in Lugansk.
