A new working team between Armenia and Tajikistan was established to study the commercial potential of the states in the perspective of expanding bilateral trade, the Minister of Economic Development of Armenia, Suren Karajan, said yesterday, following a meeting of the bilateral intergovernmental committee.

"We will discuss practical measures to improve Armenian-Tajik trade, which currently stands at $ 350,000 a year, with particular focus on the most promising sectors. We will create - said Karajan - a small working team that will evaluate the most successful merchandising categories for the two countries, trying to remove their supply barriers. "

According to the Armenian Minister's statement, plans have been made for the set up of a distribution company tasked with organising the import-export of goods, in order to establish an ever-growing industrial cooperation for in in the jewellery and light industry .

" Tajikistan is interested in tourism and information technology. The country's representatives are considering the possibility of supplying raw materials for the production of jewellery in Armenia using precious metals and then re-importing the final product in Tajikistan, "said Karajan, who is head of the Intergovernmental Committee’s Armenian Party.

Tajikistan’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Hikmatullozoda Nematullo, said he was ready to make every effort to further expand trade and economic cooperation. "The current level of trade does not reflect the real opportunities of our two countries and we intend to strengthen the capacity of business relations in the future" he said.

One of the reasons for the low level of business relations is perhaps the absence of meetings of the Intergovernmental Committee over the last 12 years. "This is one of the reasons why the parties have decided to increase the level of interaction between the two countries, as well as contacting the same Ministers of Trade in Armenia and Tajikistan."
