Units of Iraqi Army, backed by Al-Hashd Al-Sha'abi (Popular Mobilization Forces), took control of the district of Al Baaj, located west of Mosul and close to the Syrian border, following weeks-long intense battle.

According to an official announcement from the Popular Mobilization Forces, Al Baaj district is now completely liberated, describing the process as a “qualitative and great achievement”, with the key role being played by the Iraqi Air Force.

Previously, on May 12th, Popular Mobilization Forces began their process of liberating of Kairouan and Al Baaj, both of them located west of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city and the capital of Nineveh province, and not far from the Syrian border.

On May 23rd, Kairouan was liberated by Popular Mobilization Forces and the Iraqi Army.

Capturing these places is of essential meaning, as the two were frequently used by ISIS terrorists in the past due to their closeness to the Syrian border.

This also marks the fall of some of the last ISIS strongholds in Iraq.

Since October last year, Iraqi forces are involved in a massive campaign to liberate the city of Mosul from the hands of ISIS terrorists.

Vast majority of land in Mosul has been regained since, with only about 10% of the western side of the city still being occupied by ISIS.
