The 8th arms and military equipment fair, “Partner 2017”, which sees the participation of companies and delegations from 21 and 50 countries, is taking place in Belgrade.
The host country has presented several new projects. The highlight of the fair was an upgraded version of the self-propelled 'Nora', nicknamed ‘Aleksandar’. It is a 155mm self-propelled artillery piece with a range of 30km and 60km with rocket ammunition. The howitzer’s fire rate is 6 rounds per minute, twice the shooting ability of the 'Nora' currently available to the Serbian armed forces.
Interviewed by ‘Sputnik’, Military analyst Aleksandar emphasised that modernization is inexpensive since new technical solutions are based on the experiences of previous generations:
"It all started in the 1980s, when the self-propelled ‘Nora’, based on the 130mm M-46 Soviet cannon, began to be exported to Myanmar, Kenya and Bangladesh. The ‘Aleksandar’ howitzer represents the will to expand the range and increase the number of buyers in the global market”, he said.
The ‘Sumadija’ missile system was also equipped with an advanced launcher, capable of launching 2 to 12 ground-based ‘Jerina 1’ (285km range) and ‘Jerina 2’ (70km range ) missiles. The 'Jerina 1' can be tracked or can use its own navigation system. It is stated that it has a margin of error of no more than 50 meters.
As Aleksandar Radic observes, Serbia has traditionally had good rocket design skills, whose roots are in Japan, where in the 1950s the first engineering solutions for the emerging industry came to Yugoslavia. ‘Jerina’ is a combination of the "old school" and new technical solutions provided by third countries, and not from Serbia:
"It is particularly important to note that due to the events of the 1990s in the Balkans, an armed race frenzy has been created to the point that everyone keeps the finger on the trigger, ready to strike his neighbour. Only when we will officially be able to establish and to include in the respective documents of the armed forces the need for long-range missile systems, then we shall talk about introducing ‘Jerina’ missiles into our army. For the time being, we can talk exclusively of export", said the expert.
