Belgian military expenditure in 2017 will be reduced compared to last year, despite the Atlantic Alliance's request to allocate 2% of its GDP.

According to data released by NATO for the years 2010-2017, Belgium will allocate 0.91% of GDP this year, compared to 0.93% in 2016.

The Belgian military budget is steadily falling. If in 2010 defense spending was 1.08% of GDP, in 2014 it dropped to 0.98%. According to this year's forecast, Belgium is the second-last among the member countries of the alliance, before Luxembourg, for defense spending.

The overall defense budget for the 29 NATO member states in 2017 will be nearly $ 946 billion, while the United States will spend $ 683.4 billion, the alliance's report says.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the military expenditure of the members of the organisation increased for the third consecutive year, in 2017, according to preliminary estimates, with a growth of 4.3%.
