US President Donald Trump has held a telephone conversation with Saudi king Salman bin Abdul Aziz.

According to the source at the White House, Trump made the call mostly to discuss security-related issues and called for a unity among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, claiming this is crucial for defeating terrorism and promoting regional stability.

Trump also discussed ways to prevent the financing of terrorist organizations.

It is noteworthy that majority of all terror groups receive their financial sources from Saudi Arabia.

Trump’s call comes right in time of the ongoing diplomatic crisis between the GCC states, with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates having cut all diplomatic relations with Qatar, citing “terrorism and meddling in internal affairs” as the main reason behind their decision.

Meanwhile, Reuters agency quoted a source from Pentagon that US Secretary of Defense James Mattis held a telephone conversation with his Qatari counterpart, Khalid Al Attiyah.

Although both, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are considered as important US allies, as they are also hosting the US military installation in their territories, the US nonetheless seems to be considerably more favourable towards Saudi Arabia as regards the new Saudi-Qatari diplomatic row.
