In light of the ongoing diplomatic row between Qatar and the Gulf Cooperation Council states, the Attorney General of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, announced severe punishment for those either expressing sympathy with the State of Qatar or are objecting  the position of the United Arab Emirates, regarding the latest developments in relations with Qatar.

Those not obeying the new law will reportedly be subjected to an imprisonment from 3 to 15 years and/or 500 thousand Dirhams (approx $136,000) fine. 

He explained that his country has decided to take a step against the government of Qatar, blaming the latter's “hostile and irresponsible policies against a number of Arab and Gulf countries, not just Emirates”, while also pointing out that that decision was made in order to preserve the national security of the state, its national interests and the interests of its people.

Expressing sympathy with Qatar or objecting the position of the UAE will reportedly be punishable under all circumstances as it “gravely damages the UAE’s national interests, harms its national unity and distorts its social peace.”

Attorney General then emphasized that federal prosecutors will exercise their national duty to enforce the law on the perpetrators of these “crimes”.

It is noteworthy that until recently, both Qatar and the UAE were were strong allies, especially as regards the wars in Syria and Yemen. 










Several Gulf states , including the UAE announced cut off diplomatic relations with Qatar.
