The "United Russia" party in the State Duma has introduced a bill that increases criminal penalties for inducement to commit suicide by more than double - up to 15 years in prison.
"As the objects of manipulation today are mostly young people with their fragile psyche, the bill proposes to toughen the criminal responsibility for the commission of these crimes by setting the lower limit of imprisonment of five years, and the upper to 15 years", - said in a memorandum.
The project also establishes a greater responsibility on those who knowingly induce or facilitate suicide from helpless, dependent minors or people in general, as well as pregnant women.
President Putin has called the perpetrators of the crime 'the ultimate criminals' as they feed off the unripe psyche of minors who are easily influenced.
In 2017, the social media group "Blue Whale Challenge" gained widespread notoriety in Russia, which has already claimed around 130 deaths of teens and pre-teens.
