BREAKING: Syrian, Iraqi military launch simultaneous operations to clear the border region from ISIS - Like This Article

September 16, 2017 - Fort Russ News - Paul Antonopoulos

Earlier today Fort Russ News reported that Iraqi government forces and their allies have launched a new operation to liberate the settlement of Akashat in Iraq's western Anbar province near the border with Syria from ISIS.

Since the initial announcement, Akashat has been liberated from the terrorist group.

This is significant as it ties into the plan to liberate the strategic city of al-Qaim on the border with Syria. The city of around 150,000 people was captured by the terrorist group in August 2014, and is the gateway that connects ISIS-held areas of Syria to its stronghold in Anbar.

Meanwhile, and most important, the Syrian Army and its allies have begun operations to clear their side of the border and to reach Al-Bukamal, directly opposite the Iraqi city of al-Qaim.

With the Syrian military success of taking the town with a pre-war population of approximately 42,000 people, ISIS would be completely sealed from this part of the border, severely hampering their operations in both Syria and Iraq.
