Egypt's Court of Cassation on Saturday sentenced former president Mohamed Morsi to 25 years in prison in a case where he was accused of spying for Qatar for the time when he was the president, judicial sources said.
It is noteworthy that Egypt’s Court of Cassation reduced Morsi’s sentence in the Qatar case to 25 years in its final ruling, from an original 40 years (as was already determined last year), following an appeal from Mursi’s defense.
The sources added that the court also upheld death sentences for Ahmad Abd Al Ati (who was in charge of the President’s office during the short-lived period of the Morsi regime), documentary producer Ahmed Ali Abdo, EgyptAir cabin crew member Mohamed Adel Kilani, and a university teaching assistant Ahmed Ismail Thabet.
Morsi and the other defendants were referred to trial in 2014 on charges of disclosing secrets to Qatar's security and intelligence services, as well as leading a group that operated against the Egyptian law, obviously referring to the Muslim Brotherhood.
It is noteworthy that Egypt is one of the countries that ceased all their ties with Qatar back in June, citing terrorism and meddling in their internal affairs as the main reasons behind their decision.
The verdict of the court is final and cannot be appealed.
