The Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Igor Konashenkov revealed on Tuesday that US-backed and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are discharging large volumes of water from dams on the Euphrates river to hamper Syrian Army efforts against ISIS in Deir Ezzor.
This comes as only yesterday the Syrian Army successfully crossed the eastern banks of the Euphrates river and secured a large area.
"Thus, the water situation on the Euphrates has deteriorated dramatically in the past 24 hours. As soon as the Syrian government troops began to cross the river, water level in the Euphrates rose within hours and the current velocity nearly doubled to two meters per second," he said.
"Since there have been no rains, the only source of such changes in the water situation is man-induced water discharge at dams upstream the Euphrates. These facilities are held by opposition groups controlled by the US-led coalition," he stressed.
This is most likely in an effort to prevent Syrian Army troops from liberating crucial oilfields from ISIS before the Kurdish-led forces are able to do so.
