The government has decided to raise taxes on fuel to finance projects in the Crimea and the Kaliningrad region.

It is expected that the increase will be carried out in two stages - from January 1 and July 1, by 50 kopecks. This volume exceeds the indexation envisaged by the Tax Code - 4%, that is approximately 30 kopecks for 1 liter of gasoline and 23 kopecks for 1 liter of diesel fuel.

The Ministry of Energy sent a letter to the Ministry of Finance with a warning that raising the  tax by 50 kopecks per liter of fuel in retail could rise in price by 1.5% or 60 kopecks. Officials believe that by the end of 2017, the price of gasoline may increase by 2.8 rubles.

Sources in the government note that although the decision to raise excise taxes on fuel was preliminary, it is unlikely that it will be changed. Others say that on the eve of the presidential election, no one will risk this and prices will remain at the same level, at least until March next year.
