At about 10:00 am Syrian time today, Syrian government troops, supported by Russian air forces, repelled an offensive by US supported Al-Nusra terrorists on the northern fringes of Syria's largest city of Aleppo on Tuesday, killing about 40 attackers, the RIA news agency quoted Russia's Defense Ministry as saying. Syrian troops repulsed this attack of militants on the northern outskirts of Aleppo, and regained control of the southern part of the district of Al-Shkeyf.
Background and Context
In the aftermath of what appears to have been an intentional targeting of Syrian Arab Army positions in the east of the country by the US and Australian air forces, the Syrian military declared the one-week truce brokered by the United States and Russia to be over. Russia's military said it was "senseless" for Syria's army to respect the ceasefire unilaterally, while being attacked by parties unwilling to heed to the terms of the agreement.
In the aftermath of the US attack, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, stated at the press conference on September 18th following the emergency session that the ceasefire was in serious question. Events over the last several days have apparently forced the Syrian government to formally announce the ceasefire to be over. The emergency session was notable for the "heavy handed" and unprofessional manner of the US rep Samantha Power', who engaged in "demagoguery", in the words of Churkin.
Second Attack in Aleppo's south.
The Syrian military with the support of the Russian repulsed another major attack by the Al-Qaeda fraction Al-Nusra, according to the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Warring Parties in Syria, in the south of the Aleppo.
Terrorist Offensive
Al-Nusra went on the offensive in the region of Aleppo yesterday.
The Center for Reconciliation said that the terrorists fired at the south-west of Aleppo, and then moved to the assault the Aleppo quarter known as Sheikh Maqsood.
"The militants managed to dislodge government forces and the forces of the national militia from the southern outskirts of Aleppo, taking temporary control of the Castello Road, a length of about one kilometer," according to the Center's statement.
The counter-offensive of the Syrian army
The Syrian Army with the support of the Russian air force was able to repel the Islamists. As a result, the vanguard of Al-Nusra was completely destroyed.
The most violent fighting took place in the area of military schools and district in 1070 on the south-west of Aleppo.The terrorists managed to break through the position of the Syrian army and drive a wedge into the defense of the military to a depth of five hundred meters.
The SAA repulsed the first attack wave of fighters,with Russian support, has moved to the offensive.
The Center for Reconciliation pointed out that the terrorists have lost four tanks, three armored personnel carriers and nine pickups, which are mounted with heavy machine guns. About a hundred militants were killed during the fighting.
