Russian air defense troops in Crimea have shifted into readiness mode in connection with the Ukraine's announced plans to conduct missile firing drills near the peninsula. On Wednesday, November 30, an armed forces source reported this to Tass.

"Despite the fact that the missile drills seem a kind of a PR move on the part of Ukraine, intending to create a tense atmosphere, yet the Russian air defense forces in the Crimea have shifted into a mode of readiness," said the agency.

It is not only ground-based air defenses, but the shipboard ones also. "Same goes for the ships of the Black Sea fleet. They are self-contained fighting units to repel such threats," said the source.

On November 25 the Federal Air Transport Agency said that Ukraine has decided to hold missile firing drills over the high seas in the airspace in the region of Crimea. The agency demanded from Kiev the immediately cancellation of any such drills. The Russian Defense Ministry has lodged a protest to the Ukrainian side.

Later, the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine issued a statement that the missile firings will take place on December 1 and 2, "only in the airspace of Ukraine," and that they "will be carried out in strict accordance with international law."
