In December 2016, 72 people have died in a mass methanol poisoning in Irkutsk, Siberia. The poisoning was precipitated by drinking counterfeit alcohol — actually scented bath lotion that was mislabeled as containing ethanol. The lotion was mixed with methanol which is poisonous, but cheaper than ethanol that is traditionally used in alcoholic drinks.
The State Duma is considering raising taxes on all forms of alcohol so as to disincentivise the manufacture of counterfeit alcohol for human consumption. Eleven people have been detained in relation to the manufacturing and sale of the product, all to make a quick buck.
