The Ministry of Defense of Russia is proposing to strengthen the army group deployed in the Southern Military District due to the situation in the South-East of Ukraine and the threat of international terrorism. This was announced on Wednesday, January 25th, by Defense Minister and Army General Sergey Shoigu.
According to Shoigu, the military-political situation in the strategic southwestern direction remains unstable. “[This area] can be negatively impacted first and foremost by the situation in the South-East of Ukraine and the operations of international terrorist organizations and groupings in the North Caucasus,” Shoigu said at a meeting of the Ministry of Defense.
Under these circumstances, according to Shoigu: “It is necessary to continue work on improving the combat troops of the district, recruit contract servicemen, equip troops with new armaments and military vehicles, as well as develop military infrastructure.”
According to the minister, over the last year “the combat capacity of the district has been increased by 10%.” Contract recruitments are ongoing, new weapons are being employed, and military infrastructure is being improved.
