Russian President Vladimir Putin has held a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The two leaders discussed the aggravation of the situation in Donbass and expressed concern over the escalation of the armed conflict, the Kremlin’s press service reports.
“The situation in South-East Ukraine was discussed, which has in recent days sharply deteriorated due to the provocative actions of the Ukrainian side. Serious concern was expressed over the escalation of the armed conflict as a result of which there are human casualties and significant damage to civilian infrastructure and housing in a number of residential areas of Donbass,” the report reads.
Merkel and Putin agreed to intensify diplomatic efforts with the aim of facilitating a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. In the near future, they plan to hold a meeting of foreign ministers in the Normandy format and continue to discuss the situation at the highest level.
The question of resolving the situation in Donbass has been discussed at a number of meetings of the Minsk contact Group, which since September 2014 has adopted three documents regulating the steps towards de-escalating the conflict. However, firefights continue between the opposing sides despite the conclusion of ceasefire agreements.
