The February 12th US airstrikes killed civilians in Afghanistan. Shakdam points out that the US as a practice does not generally admit to causing civilian deaths and casualties in its ongoing campaign. She explains the use and utility of intelligence gathering efforts which ostensibly lead to civilians being targeted.
Shakdam disputes the figure given by the US, which limits the recognized fatalities in Syria and Iraq to around 200. Shakdam puts forward a number of theories as to why the US is understanding the actual number of casualties. The US must manage expectations, credibility, and guilt, while not admitting to the full scope, in order to maintain its presence without further stoking a negative reaction to their activities.
