"Donetsk: Greeks enter the struggle for sovereignty and independence" |
On Tuesday, March 22, a particularly important event took place. Despite the dissatisfaction of the Greek government, an office of the People's Republic of Donetsk was finally opened in Athens.
An office of the People's Republic of Donetsk already exists in other European countries, including Italy and the Czech Republic. These organizations mainly have informative, communicative and cultural missions.
"It should not be forgotten that in the Donetsk region there is a large Greek community, about 100,000 strong. We fund a Greek school there.
Unfortunately, the Greek state does not support this great Greek community. We are also funding a cultural center in Gorlovka" (Donetsk region), said Andreas Zafiris, the DPR bureau chief to Sputnik.
Panayótis Lafazánis, former Greek energy minister and head of the Greek political party Popular Unity, also believes that it is essential to support the citizens in distress and to help them become free and independent.
"We want the victory of the people who seek to obtain sovereignty and independence. The people of Donetsk have the same desires that we have here in Greece. We shall soon be able to obtain freedom and independence. It is also our struggle. We are in solidarity with Donetsk and the struggle of his people," Lafazánis said.
Natalia Nikanorova, DPR Minister of Foreign Affairs, thanked the Greeks on behalf of all the people of the Republic for their "contribution to the development of the Donetsk People's Republic as a member of the international community".
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied information on the opening of the Office of the Donetsk Peoples Republic (DPR) in Athens, Greece.
"The information on the opening of the" informal "delegation obviously does not reflect the real situation", reads the website of the ministry.
Nevertheless, Andreas Zafiris remains convinced that "the opening of the Office of the Donetsk Peoples Republic in Greece is an event of great political importance for the anti-fascist struggle of the peoples of Eastern Ukraine".
"Whatever the final position of the Greek government, whether to recognize the popular republics or not, they have this recognition in the minds of the Greek people. And this is what is most important," he concluded.
In April 2014, the Kiev authorities launched a military operation against the Donetsk and Lugansk Peoples Republics, which had proclaimed their independence following the February 2014 coup in Ukraine.
Under the Minsk agreements, Kiev was to implement a constitutional reform before the end of 2015 and to carry out a decentralization, and adopt a law giving the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk a special status. These commitments have not been met by the Ukrainian authorities.
