The German government approved 13 Turkish electoral districts so that Turkish citizens living in Germany will be able to cast their vote in the forthcoming the Turkish constitutional referendum.

Aside from the the consular missions in Berlin, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Münster and Karlsruhe, there will be additional polling stations in Dortmund, Munich, Hanover and Nuremberg, reports Spiegel Online . The decision of the German government was made following a request from the Turkish Embassy in Germany and was later approved by the German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) and the German Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière (CDU).

According to the statement from the Federal Foreign Office, the authorities expects "a reliable and constructive cooperation from Turkey in making all the necessary preparations for voting" . The approval is also granted with a proviso that the Turkish side will act transparently in the wake of the forthcoming event. This includes the information about the referendum campaigns of Turkish ministers in Germany. The permission could be withdrawn if Ankara would start to act in an abusive or defamatory manner.

Top Turkish politicians had previously announced at least 15 campaign-related events to take place in Germany by the end of March.

On 16th of April, Turkish citizens will head to the polls to cast their votes in a constitutional referendum that could result in a significant power gain for the Turkish president.

Approx. 1.4 million Turkish citizens living in Germany are eligible to cast their votes. In recent weeks several Turkish campaign events in Germany have been canceled or postponed, mostly due to safety concerns. As a result, Turkey accused the German government of using “Nazi methods”.
