Russia and Japan are preparing to discuss the unresolved question of Kuril Islands.

Moscow, which is considering to deploy a Russian army contingent in the Kuril Islands, is rather concerned, due to recent Japanese military activities in the Kuril Islands.

In an interview which was published on Friday by the Japanese Press Agency, Igor Morgulov, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, said that the subject of Russian troops in the Kuril Islands, could be touched in the upcoming talks in Tokyo on March 20th when Defense and Foreign Ministers of Russia and Japan will meet.

Morgulov stressed that the Japanese partners must be prepared to provide clarifications of Japan’s military activities in the Kuril Islands, which raised some concern within the Russian side.
The Russian diplomat did not provide the details of the decision taken by the Russian army to strengthen the defense capabilities in the region.

Russia and Japan attempt to settle the issue of disputed territory of Kuril Islands which remains open ever since the WW2. The two sides allegedly prepared their own set of proposals.

Both Moscow and Tokyo agreed on a package of steps to launch a joint economic projects in the islands, however, Tokyo expressed deep concern over the Russian Ministry of Defense’s decisions, related to strengthening defense capabilities in the region, Kuril Islands including.
